Treatment for the nervous colon

Nervous colon is a common disorder of your gastrointestinal tract resulting from abnormal gut motility. The disease is characterised by irregular bowel habits (alternating constipation and diarrhea), mucus in stools, bloating and abdominal pain. All these symptoms are usually chronic in nature and last for years. The disease is not associated with any serious problems in organs but can cause recurrent discomfort.

The diagnosis of the nervous colon is usually made by excluding other possible diseases with similar symptoms. The disease can affect both the sexes equally and occurs in individuals in their early forties or late teens.

The cause of nervous colon also known as irritable bowel syndrome is poorly understood. There are some environmental and genetic factors that may contribute to the aggravation of this disease. Other possible causes include alteration in the intestinal microflora, inflammation of the intestine, and change in the colon motility.

Treatment of nervous colon

The treatment of nervous colon is primarily directed towards providing symptomatic relief that includes medication (to offer relief from symptoms), relaxation techniques (yoga, massage etc), exercises and change in diet (avoiding sweeteners, milk products and caffeine while taking foods with high fiber content). However, there is no specific treatment common for every individual rather emphasis should be given to individualised treatment.

But if you are suffering from nervous colon then you should have high fiber food, quit smoking, exercise regularly, have enough liquid (2.5 liters per day), and add fiber supplements to your diet. Reduce intake of sodas, teas, chocolates, red peppers, wheat, red wine, green onions and coffee. Instead of dairy products try to consume fish, green vegetables, broccoli, yogurt and tofu. More importantly, try to remain stress-free and learn to relax. Daily exercise can relax your mind while improving your physical health. Try over-the-counter medicines like an antidepressant, antacids to get relief from symptoms of the nervous colon.
